It seems like once or twice a week I get an email from a customer asking where they can find the latest version of one of my software products. They see that a new version has come out and they expect to find it in their downloads. Rather than continue to reply to each email and explain what happened I figured I would write an article that I can link them to. This is that article…
While I’m in the business of creating internet marketing products, I like to create useful products that people can use to grow their business. I’m not trying to copy the latest trends. In fact, most of my software has been copied by other people in internet marketing. I’ve long since given up on complaining when it happens. But it does mean you have other options when it comes to purchasing my software. If you like the features that others have, rather than expect me to give you those same features for free, you can buy them from the copycat developer! I’m not in the business of charity.
Just like any other software product company – development costs me time, money and resources.
Now sometimes rather than create the latest trend product I decide to put the time into improving my own products. If it’s just adding a feature or two after the launch, yes I’ll do the update for free. Especially if you buy a lifetime license to a hosted program. In this case you can expect updates. But let’s talk about WordPress plugins. These aren’t hosted programs and they were never sold as having lifetime updates for free. I’m not even sure where people get this idea from. For a while in internet marketing people were offering “lifetime updates”, but I was never one of them. Most of these people (if not all of them) are gone now. They went out of business because that model isn’t sustainable.
There are a few software products (outside of my own) that I use in my business every day. Many of them were made by multimillion dollar companies as I will point out. And none of them offer free updates. Take a look at these screenshots… Here’s one from my screen capture program:
ScreenFlow 6 is a paid upgrade.
ScreenFlow is made by Telestream which according to Crunchbase has received $54 Million in funding.
Now ask yourself this… If this company that received $54 Million in funding can’t afford to give you their latest work for free? What makes you think I can? Don’t be me wrong, I do care about my customers, which is why I strive to provide high quality software in the first place. But I can’t afford to give in to their every request and give them lifetime upgrades for free. It’s just not possible.
Here’s a few more just to re-iterate my point:
CleanMy Mac (hard drive maintenance)
Panic Transmit (FTP Program)
Panic Coda (Coding Software)
Where Did This Free Update Idea Come From?
When I released my first successful product Click Jacker (which sold 5,000+ copies) I did 6 updates without charging anything. I was new, and I was yet to realize that the more I gave, the more people would ask for. I can easily spend all day everyday answering support questions if I really wanted to. And hiring a VA isn’t as easy as it sounds, the last VA I hired spent 6 hours on one ticket.
When I redid Click Jacker from scratch and launched it again, only about 400 of the 5,000 people who purchased chose to buy the upgrade. Same with Link Cloaker 2, very few people wanted to buy the upgrade. My solution to this was to package all my software along w/ 4 weeks of training on how to use it into a program called the Diamond Elite Club. I have about 50 people in this training and all of them get my latest software (including the latest versions) for free. I even offered it as a free bonus if you join by buddy Don’s training: Check out this article for more information about that.
Finally, while none of the examples that I gave are internet marketing products per se, they are products that I use for internet marketing. Other internet marketing software products charge for updates as well, so it’s not limited to any specific genre. Easy Sketch Pro, Explandio, and Video Maker FX are the three best selling products on JV Zoo and all three of them charge for updates.
If you want to get my latest software along with 4 hours of high quality webinar recordings you can join my Diamond Elite Club. This will not only make sure you have the latest version of everything I’ve created up until the time you purchase, it will also give you more than the value of your investment in the training alone. Or you can wait until I offer them in a product launch. But if you want free updates, free software for bonuses, or free software that seemingly does the same stuff mine does in exchange for your email you’ll have to find it elsewhere. I don’t have business partners with giant lists of newbies that can support me. I don’t have funding from outside companies, spammer friends, or a jv manager.
All I have is my ideas, which I turn into products, and sell for a fair price. If you don’t want to pay for them, you don’t have to. But I can’t be giving them away for free. Enough people do that for me.
